Is Sports Betting Legal In New York?

Sports betting is now legal in the state of New York with a landmark ruling seeing the arrival of sportsbooks in July 2019.

The River Casino & Resort have launched their sportsbook, becoming the first to do so. The casino, located in Schenectady, 170 miles north of New York City, has opened a betting lounge for up to 80 people, allowing for betting on the likes of NFL, NHL, soccer, baseball, college sports and more.

FanDuel at Tioga Downs followed just a few days later, making it the first opportunity to bet on sport in the southern part of the state.

However, while sports betting is beginning to be rolled out in the state, there are no signs of any New York betting apps arriving currently, with only in-person sports betting at the River Casino & Resort and Tioga Downs currently legal to those of legal betting age.

Online Sports Betting In New York: The Latest

July 2019 welcomed the first sportsbook to New York at the Rivers Casino & Resort. The casino was the first of four upstate casinos to gain official approval from the State Gaming Commission with the New York Post reporting that the Del Lago, Tioga Downs and Resorts World Catskills having also had in-person sports betting regulations approved.

The Tioga Downs sportsbook followed just a few days later, with FanDuel operating out of the Nichols casino. FanDuel has had huge success in New Jersey since launching last year, and it’s expected that the brand will enjoy just as much success in New York.

It isn’t yet clear when the other two sportsbook operations will launch, but we will bring you all the latest updates as they are released.

What does look further away is mobile betting? The likes of New Jersey have really benefited from online and mobile betting but the State’s legislature ended its term in mid-June 2019 without passing a bill.

That means that there’s no chance of mobile betting being voted on until at least January 2020, when Andrew Cuomo will be governor.

That could delay mobile betting further. Cuomo has previously stated that legalizing New York betting apps would violate the state’s constitution. He believes the constitution should be amended before mobile betting lands in the state.

That requires a referendum which could take up to three years.

Debate continues to be rife in New York in regards to mobile sports betting, particularly as New Jersey and Pennsylvania continue to have thriving industries.

There’s a fear that many New Yorkers are crossing the borders in order to place their bets and that’s a large amount of revenue the state is missing out on.
