Borgata is owned by Marina District Development, a company half owned by Boyd Gaming, which operates several smaller casinos around the country, and a trust set up by MGM Resorts International.

Back in 2010, the New Jersey Gaming Commission wanted MGM resorts to sell its 50% stake in Borgata, due to the Commission being uncomfortable with the role that billionaire casino owner Stanley Ho and his daughter Pansy Ho played in the MGM Macau, given the accusations that the family is connected to organized crime in China.

In 2014, the Commission relented, and MGM is back on the white list, after these concerns were dealt with satisfactorily.

Borgata is located in the Marina district of Atlantic City, and there was originally 3 casino hotels to be built there, including a Mirage. Steve Wynn campaigned to get n exit ramp on the a 2.5 mile connector proposed from the Atlantic City Expressway to the Marina district, and went head to head with Donald Trump who sued him, claiming he expected the government to pay for his own private driveway.

Wynn‘s casino never did get built, as his Mirage company got bought out by MGM, who proposed building Borgata instead. The connector went ahead, and Borgata ended up getting the exit ramp. One of Trump’s casinos got a ramp as well so everyone ended up happy.
