The WV online gambling landscape has gone through major changes since the overturning of PASPA. Still, there are a few things that need to be worked out before West Virginians have access to the full slate. WV online sports betting is a reality, and West Virginia online casinos and online poker rooms appear to be on the way. The new online sportsbooks launched in WV are DraftKings Sportsbook, Fanduel Sportsbook, William Hill and BetMGM. DraftKings teamed up with Penn National Gaming and FanDuel & BetMGM with The Greenbrier. William Hill has partnered with the Mountaineer Casino Racetrack &. Technically, there has been online sports betting in West Virginia since 2018. However, the only current sportsbooks still active in the state are FanDuel Sportsbook WV, DraftKings Sportsbook WV, and BetMGM Sportsbook WV. Both FanDuel and DraftKings have been accepting wagers in the state since August 2019. BETMGM launched in January 2020. West Virginia became the fifth state to legalise sports betting in August of 2018 shortly after they signed a new bill into law. Regulation of sports betting in West Virginia is the responsibility of the state lottery and caters for both in-store and mobile betting. Currently, only three online sportsbooks are operating in West Virginia.

The two biggest mobile sports betting markets in the US ended a record-setting 2020 by hitting new monthly revenue highs.

December online sports betting in New Jersey capped off a year that set the gold standard in the legal US sports betting market. Pennsylvania capped off 2020 on a streak of staggering growth through the final quarter of the year.

Both states ended up with new monthly mobile sports betting revenue records in December. Barstool Sportsbook took the No. 1 spot in Pennsylvania for the first time, and that could be a sign of things to come for the newest big player in sports betting.

William Hill Reigns Supreme In Iowa

William Hill persisted as the No. 1 online sports betting operator in Iowa throughout the year. The sports betting giant offers mobile wagering under three different licenses in the Hawkeye State, with the William Hill Sportsbook at Prairie Meadows license ending 2020 as the state’s top-earning operator.

A quartet of Caesars Entertainment-owned properties (Harrah’s Council Bluffs, Horseshoe Council Bluffs, Isle of Capri Bettendorf, and Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo) operate under a separate license, which came in as the third-highest earning operator in the state for 2020.

DraftKings Sportsbook (licensed to Wild Rose Casino) edged out Caesars for the No. 2 annual revenue spot with December’s figures factored in.

Monthly revenue tailed off a bit for the second straight month, with Iowa’s online sportsbook down 12.8% month-to-month. Iowa hit an all-time monthly high in October ($6,371,281), but revenue has dropped since then.

FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM Sit Atop The Mountain State

West Virginia’s mobile sportsbooks finished off 2020 on a steady stream of revenue production. October ($2,516,871) marked the all-time monthly high for online sports betting revenue, followed by similar numbers in November ($2,475,134) and December ($2,421,104).

The Greenbrier operates as the only land-based casino partner running multiple online sports betting skins. With FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM under the banner, the Greenbrier topped West Virginia’s mobile revenue by operator rankings for 2020.

The most recent additions to the Mountain State market (William Hill, Betly) still have a ways to go to catch the state’s mobile wagering leaders.

It was another successful month of sports betting in the Mountain State in December. West Virginia sportsbooks took in more than $53 million in bets, up about $5 million from the previous month.

WV online sports betting apps accounted for about 62% of the total. They accepted almost $33 million over the course of the month.

The Greenbrier’s combination of FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook led the way in terms of online wagers. They were responsible for nearly $19 million in handle.

Hollywood Casino’sDraftKings Sportsbook also performed well. It saw over $12 million in bets in December.

WV sportsbooks earned plenty of revenue during the month, too. They made more than $4.7 million to close out the year.

WV Sports Betting Handle

The $53 million bet in December was about a 10% increase from November wagering.

Despite not taking the most mobile bets, Hollywood Casino led all others for the month. It took in a total of $26 million in handle over the four weeks.

For the third consecutive month, Hollywood’s retail book outperformed its online platform. The slightly over $13.4 million is about $700,000 more than DraftKings accepted.

The Greenbrier finished second in handle with around $20 million. Since its retail location is private, the majority of the resort’s betting is done online.

Its online sportsbooks had nearly $19 million in wagers, or about 92% of the overall figure.

Mountaineer Casino placed third with just over $5 million for the month. While its online app in William Hill Sportsbook accumulated about $1.1 million in handle, Mountaineer’s retail location did the heavy lifting.

It was responsible for nearly $4 million in bets.

Mardi Gras Casino and Wheeling Island were last among the state’s active sportsbooks. They brought in around $900,000 and $830,000, respectively.

Both locations received some help from their Betly online sportsbook. Mardi Gras saw $165,000 in online bets, whereas Wheeling’s app was around $70,000.

WV Sports Betting Revenue

WV sportsbooks earned over $1 million in three of the four weeks in December. The over $4.7 million in December revenue was an 8% jump up from November.

Hollywood Casino led the state’s sportsbooks in generating profits, as well. It earned more than $2.3 million during the month.

Similar to the handle breakdown, Hollywood’s retail sportsbook produced more revenue than DraftKings. Its land-based book was responsible for almost $1.5 million, while the online app was around $850,000.

When Will West Va Have Sports Betting

The Greenbrier finished second with slightly over $1.5 million in revenue. FanDuel and BetMGM accounted for almost $1.4 million of the total.

Sportsbook

Mountaineer Casino was third in December with about $560,000 in earnings. Although its retail sportsbook made over $415,000 altogether, it actually lost more than $160,000 for the week of Dec. 26.

Mountaineer’s William Hill app made almost $145,000 for the month.

While Wheeling Island didn’t take as many wagers, it did outperform Mardi Gras Casino in terms of revenue.

Wheeling Island earned around $220,000 last month, as opposed to the $130,000 from its sister property.

Wv Sportsbook App

The Betly platform netted about $14,000 for Wheeling and $36,000 for Mardi Gras.
